cultivate certain qualities.
He should be capable, honest, perfectly upright, receptive to advice, gentle,
not arrogant, content, easy to support, with few duties, live simply with few
needs, keeping his sense faculties calm and restrained, intelligent, not crude, and
not greedy among families (when interacting with families).
Verses 03:
समाचरेय्य।

May all sentient beings truly (indeed) be happy and safe. May they be happy in their hearts.

न च खुद्दं समाचरे किञ्चि येन विञ्ञू परे उपवदेय्युं।
सुखिनो वा खेमिनो होन्तु सब्बे सत्ता भवन्तु सुखितत्ता॥

sukhino vā khemino hontu sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā||
He should
not do even the slightest thing that wise people and others would criticize.
May all sentient beings truly be happy and safe. May they be happy in their hearts.
Verses 04-05:

पाणभूता अत्थि।

There are
these beings (These beings are).
ये केचि पाणभूता अत्थि।
ye keci pāṇabhūtā atthi|
Whatever kinds of beings they are.
ये केचि पाणभूता अत्थि, ते सब्बे सत्ता सुखितत्ता भवन्तु।
ye keci pāṇabhūtā atthi, te sabbe sattā
sukhitattā bhavantu|
Whatever kinds of beings they are, may all those beings be happy in
their hearts.
ये केचि पाणभूतत्थि, ते अनवसेसा सब्बे सत्ता सुखितत्ता भवन्तु।

sabbe sattā sukhitattā bhavantu|
Whatever kind of beings they
are, may all those beings - without exception - be happy in their
hearts.

Neither should wish suffering upon the other because of hatred and hostility.

One should
not bully, insult, deceive, or despise anyone anywhere.
Neither of them should wish suffering upon the other out of hatred and hostility.

अनुरक्खेय्य।

माता अनुरक्खेय्य।

The mother should
protect.
माता पुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य।

The mother should
protect her child.
माता नियं पुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य।

The mother should
protect her own child.
माता नियं पुत्तं एकपुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य।
mātā niyaṃ puttaṃ ekaputtaṃ anurakkheyya|
The mother should
protect her only child.
माता आयुसा नियं पुत्तं एकपुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य।
mātā āyusā
niyaṃ puttaṃ ekaputtaṃ anurakkheyya|
The mother should protect her only child with her life.
भावये।

A person
should cultivate.
मानसं भावये।
mānasaṃ bhāvaye|
A person should
cultivate a mind.
अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।
aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ bhāvaye|
A person should
cultivate an immeasurable (boundless) mind.
सब्बभूतेसु अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।
sabbabhūtesu
aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ bhāvaye|
A person should
cultivate an immeasurable
mind toward all beings.
माता आयुसा नियं पुत्तं एकपुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य।
सब्बभूतेसु अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।

niyaṃ puttaṃ ekaputtaṃ anurakkheyya|
sabbabhūtesu aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ bhāvaye|
यथा माता आयुसा नियं पुत्तं एकपुत्तं अनुरक्खे,
एवम्पि सब्बभूतेसु अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।
yathā mātā
āyusā niyaṃ puttaṃ ekaputtaṃ anurakkhe,
evampi sabbabhūtesu aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ bhāvaye|
माता यथा नियं पुत्तं आयुसा एकपुत्तमनुरक्खे।
एवम्पि सब्बभूतेसु मानसं भावये अपरिमाणं॥
mātā yathā niyaṃ puttaṃ āyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe|
evampi sabbabhūtesu mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ||
Just as a mother protects her only child with her life.
So too should one cultivate the immeasurable mind toward all beings.
Verses 08:
अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।
aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ bhāvaye|
One should cultivate a boundless mind.
अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं भावये।
aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ mettaṃ bhāvaye|
One should cultivate a boundless mind of loving kindness.
सब्बलोकस्मिं अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं भावये।
sabbalokasmiṃ aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ mettaṃ bhāvaye|
One should cultivate a boundless mind of loving kindness
toward the entire world.
सब्बलोकस्मिं उद्धं च अधो च तिरियं च अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं भावये।
sabbalokasmiṃ uddhaṃ ca adho ca tiriyaṃ ca aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ mettaṃ bhāvaye|
One should cultivate a boundless mind of loving kindness
toward the entire world, above, below and in all
directions.
सब्बलोकस्मिं उद्धं च अधो च तिरियं च अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं असम्बाधं अवेरं असपत्तं भावये।
sabbalokasmiṃ uddhaṃ ca adho ca tiriyaṃ ca aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ mettaṃ asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattaṃ bhāvaye|
One should practice the immeasurable mind of loving kindness - unobstructed, free from resentment and hatred - toward the entire world, above, below and in all directions.
सब्बलोकस्मिं उद्धं च अधो च तिरियं च अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं असम्बाधं अवेरं असपत्तं भावये।
sabbalokasmiṃ uddhaṃ ca adho ca tiriyaṃ ca aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ mettaṃ asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattaṃ bhāvaye|
मेत्तञ्च सब्बलोकस्मिं [1] मानसं भावये अपरिमाणं।
उद्धं अधो च तिरियञ्च असम्बाधं अवेरं असपत्तं॥
mettañca
sabbalokasmiṃ mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ|
uddhaṃ adho ca tiriyañca asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattaṃ||
One should practice the immeasurable mind of loving kindness
- unobstructed, free from resentment and hatred - toward the entire world,
above, below and in all directions.
[1] सब्बलोकस्मिं sabbalokasmiṃ = the entire world, implies all beings in the entire world.
Verses 09:
अधिट्ठेय्य।
adhiṭṭheyya|
He should
focus (resolve).
सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य।
satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya|
He should
focus (resolve) on a clear mind.
एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य।
etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya|
He should focus (resolve) on this clear mind.
तिट्ठं वा चरं वा निसिन्नो वा सयानो वा एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य।
tiṭṭhaṃ vā caraṃ vā nisinno vā sayāno vā etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya|
Whether
standing, walking, sitting, lying down, one should focus (resolve) on this clear mind.
यावता अस्स।
yāvatā assa|
As long as he is.
यावता विगतमिद्धो अस्स।
yāvatā vigatamiddho assa|
As long as he is not drowsy (sluggish, lethargic, vague).
यावता विगतमिद्धो अस्स, तिट्ठं वा चरं वा निसिन्नो वा सयानो वा एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य।

vigatamiddho assa, tiṭṭhaṃ vā caraṃ vā nisinno vā sayāno vā etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya|
As long as one is not drowsy (sluggish, lethargic, vague), whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, one should focus (resolve) on this clear mind.
आहु।
They
said. (It is said)
विहारं आहु।
vihāraṃ āhu|
They said residence.
एतं विहारं आहु।
etaṃ vihāraṃ āhu|
They said
this residence.
एतं विहारं ब्रह्मं आहु।
etaṃ vihāraṃ brahmaṃ āhu|
It is said
to be this peaceful / pure state (dwelling).
एतं विहारं इध ब्रह्मं आहु।
etaṃ vihāraṃ idha brahmaṃ āhu|
It is said to be this peaceful / pure state (dwelling) in this very life.
यावता विगतमिद्धो अस्स, तिट्ठं वा चरं वा निसिन्नो वा सयानो वा एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य। एतं विहारं इध ब्रह्मं आहु।
yāvatā vigatamiddho assa, tiṭṭhaṃ vā caraṃ vā nisinno vā sayāno vā etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya| etaṃ vihāraṃ idha brahmaṃ āhu|
तिट्ठं चरं निसिन्नो वा सयानो वा यावतस्स विगतमिद्धो।
एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य ब्रह्ममेतं विहारं इधमाहु॥
tiṭṭhaṃ caraṃ nisinno vā sayāno vā yāvatassa
vigatamiddho|
etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya brahmametaṃ vihāraṃ idhamāhu||
So long as one does not fall into drowsiness (sluggishness,
lethargy), whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, one should firmly
resolve to maintain this clear mind.
This is said to be the most excellent, peaceful state attainable in this very
life.
Verses 10:
एति।
eti|
He goes to (comes to).
पुनर एति।
punara eti|
He goes again.
जातु पुनर एति।
jātu punara
eti|
He surely goes again.
न जातु पुनर एति।
na jātu
punara eti|
He never goes again.
न हि जातु पुनर एति।
na hi jātu
punara eti|
Indeed, he
never goes again.
न हि जातु गब्भसेय्यं पुनर एति।
na hi jātu
gabbhaseyyaṃ punara eti|
Indeed, he
never goes to the mother’s womb (saṃsāra) again.
दिट्ठिं अनुपगम्म न हि जातु गब्भसेय्यं पुनर एति।
diṭṭhiṃ anupagamma na hi jātu gabbhaseyyaṃ punara eti|
Having not fallen into a wrong view, indeed, one does not return to the mother’s womb (saṃsāra) again.
दिट्ठिं अनुपगम्म सीलवा दस्सनेन सम्पन्नो न हि जातु गब्भसेय्यं पुनर एति।
diṭṭhiṃ anupagamma sīlavā dassanena
sampanno na hi jātu gabbhaseyyaṃ punara eti|
Having not fallen into a wrong view, possessing right
understanding and reasonable conduct, indeed, one does not return to the mother’s womb (saṃsāra) again.
दिट्ठिं अनुपगम्म सीलवा दस्सनेन सम्पन्नो
कामेसु गेधं विनेय्य न हि जातु गब्भसेय्यं पुनर एति।
diṭṭhiṃ anupagamma sīlavā dassanena
sampanno
kāmesu gedhaṃ vineyya na hi jātu gabbhaseyyaṃ punara eti|
Having not fallen into a wrong view, possessing right
understanding and reasonable conduct, and having eliminated the mind filled
with craving and attachment
towards sensory pleasures.
Indeed, one does not return to the mother’s womb (saṃsāra) again.
