Verses 01-02:

पदं (होति)।

padaṃ (hoti)|

There is a state.


सन्तं पदं (होति)।

santaṃ padaṃ (hoti)|

There is a silent or peaceful state (Nibbāna).



अभिसमेति।

abhisameti|

He realizes (knows).


अत्थकुसलो अभिसमेति।

atthakusalo abhisameti|

A person skilled in what is beneficial (meaningful) to him, he realizes (knows).


अत्थकुसलो सन्तं पदं अभिसमेति।

atthakusalo santaṃ padaṃ abhisameti|

A person skilled in what is beneficial (meaningful) to him, he realizes (knows) the peaceful state.


सन्तं पदं (होति) अत्थकुसलो सन्तं पदं अभिसमेति।

santaṃ padaṃ (hoti)| atthakusalo santaṃ padaṃ abhisameti|

There is really a silent or peaceful state. A person skilled in what is beneficial (meaningful) realizes (knows) the peaceful state.

There is any peaceful state, one skilled in what is beneficial (meaningful) realizes (knows) that peaceful state.



करणीयं (होति)।

karaṇīyaṃ (hoti)|

There is something that should be done.


अत्थकुसलेन करणीयं (होति)।

atthakusalena karaṇīyaṃ (hoti)|

There is something that should be done by the person who knows well what is beneficial to him.


अत्थकुसलो यं तं सन्तं पदं अभिसमेतिअत्थकुसलेन करणीयं (होति)।

atthakusalo yaṃ taṃ santaṃ padaṃ abhisameti| atthakusalena karaṇīyaṃ (hoti)|

The person who is skilled in what is beneficial (meaningful) to him, realizes (knows) that any silent state is there.
There is something that should be done by this person.


यं तं सन्तं पदं अभिसमेच्च अत्थकुसलेन करणीयं (होति)।

yaṃ taṃ santaṃ padaṃ abhisamecca atthakusalena karaṇīyaṃ (hoti)|

Having understood that there truly exists a peaceful state (Nibbāna), a person skilled in what is truly beneficial (meaningful) should do something.

He should be.


सक्को अस्स​।

sakko assa|

He should be capable.


सक्को च उजू च अस्स​।

sakko ca ujū ca assa|

He should be capable and honest.


सक्को च उजू च सूजू च अस्स​।

sakko ca ujū ca sūjū ca assa|

He should be capable, honest, perfectly upright.


सक्को च उजू च सूजू च सुवचो च अस्स​।

He should be capable, honest, perfectly upright, receptive to advice.

He should be capable, honest, perfectly upright, receptive to advice, gentle (soft).

यं तं सन्तं पदं अभिसमेच्च अत्थकुसलेन करणीयं (होति)।

करणीयमत्थकुसलेन यन्तं सन्तं पदं अभिसमेच्च​।

सक्को उजू च सूजू च सुवचो चस्स मुदु अनतिमानी॥

सन्तुस्सको च सुभरो च अप्पकिच्चो च सल्लहुकवुत्ति।

सन्तिन्द्रियो च निपको च अप्पगब्भो कुलेसु अननुगिद्धो॥

sakko ujū ca sūjū ca suvaco cassa mudu anatimānī||
santussako ca subharo ca appakicco ca sallahukavutti|
santindriyo ca nipako ca appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho||

Having understood that there truly exists a peaceful state (Nibbāna), a person skilled in what is beneficial and meaningful should cultivate certain qualities.
He should be capable, honest, perfectly upright, receptive to advice, gentle, not arrogant, content, easy to support, with few duties, live simply with few needs, keeping his sense faculties calm and restrained, intelligent, not crude, and not greedy among families (when interacting with families). 


Verses 03:

समाचरेय्य​।

samācareyya|

He should do a thing.


समाचरेय्य​।

na samācareyya|

He should not do a thing.


किञ्चि समाचरेय्य​।

na kiñci samācareyya|

He should not do anything.


न किञ्चि खुद्दं समाचरेय्य​।

na kiñci khudda samācareyya|

He should not do any small thing. 



उपवदेय्युं।

upavadeyyu|

They should criticize.


विञ्ञू उपवदेय्युं।

viññū upavadeyyu|

Wise people should criticize.


विञ्ञू परे उपवदेय्युं।

viññū pare upavadeyyu|

Wise people and others would criticize .


विञ्ञू तेन परे उपवदेय्युं।

viññū tena pare upavadeyyu|

Wise people and others would criticize because of that (small thing).


न किञ्चि खुद्दं समाचरेय्य​ विञ्ञू तेन परे उपवदेय्युं।

na kiñci khudda samācareyya| viññū tena pare upavadeyyu|

He should not do any small thing. Wise people and others would criticize because of that (small thing).


न किञ्चि खुद्दं समाचरेय्य​, विञ्ञू तेन परे उपवदेय्युं।

na kiñci khudda samācareyya, viññū tena pare upavadeyyu|

He should not do any small thing, wise people and others would criticize because of that (small thing).


न किञ्चि खुद्दं समाचरे, विञ्ञू येन परे उपवदेय्युं।

na kiñci khudda samācare, viññū yena pare upavadeyyu|

He should not do even the slightest thing that wise people and others would criticize.



होन्तु।

hontu|

May they be.


सुखिनो होन्तु।

sukhino hontu|

May they be happy.


सुखिनो खेमिनो होन्तु।

sukhino khemino hontu|

May they be happy and safe.


सब्बे सत्ता सुखिनो खेमिनो होन्तु।

sabbe sattā sukhino khemino hontu|

May all beings be happy and safe.


सब्बे सत्ता सुखिनो एव खेमिनो होन्तु।

sabbe sattā sukhino eva khemino hontu|

May all beings truly (indeed) be happy and safe.


सब्बे सत्ता सुखिनो वा खेमिनो होन्तु।

sabbe sattā sukhino vā khemino hontu|

May all sentient beings truly (indeed) be happy and safe.


सब्बे सत्ता सुखिनो वा खेमिनो होन्तु। सुखितत्ता भवन्तु

sabbe sattā sukhino vā khemino hontu| sukhitattā bhavantu|

May all sentient beings truly (indeed) be happy and safe. May they be happy in their hearts.




न किञ्चि खुद्दं समाचरे, विञ्ञू येन परे उपवदेय्युं।
सब्बे सत्ता सुखिनो वा खेमिनो होन्तु। सुखितत्ता भवन्तु।

na kiñci khudda samācare, viññū yena pare upavadeyyu|
sabbe sattā sukhino vā khemino hontu| sukhitattā bhavantu|


न  खुद्दं समाचरे किञ्चि येन विञ्ञू परे उपवदेय्युं।
सुखिनो वा खेमिनो होन्तु सब्बे सत्ता भवन्तु सुखितत्ता॥

na ca khudda samācare kiñci yena viññū pare upavadeyyu
sukhino vā khemino hontu sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā||

He should not do even the slightest thing that wise people and others would criticize.
May all sentient beings truly be happy and safe. May they be happy in their hearts.



Verses 04-05:

अत्थि।

atthi|

There is (He is).


पाणभूता अत्थि।

abhūtā atthi|

There are these beings (These beings are).


ये केचि पाणभूता अत्थि।

ye keciabhūtā atthi|

Whatever kinds of beings they are.


ये केचि पाणभूता त्थि, ते सब्बे सत्ता सुखितत्ता भवन्तु।

ye keci pāabhū atthi, te sabbe sattā sukhitattā bhavantu|

Whatever kinds of beings they are, may all those beings be happy in their hearts.


ये केचि पाणभूत्थि, ते अनवसेसा सब्बे सत्ता सुखितत्ता भवन्तु।

ye keci pāabhūtatthi, te anavasesā sabbe sattā sukhitattā bhavantu|

Whatever kind of beings they are, may all those beings - without exception - be happy in their hearts.



ये केचि पाणभूतत्थि, ये तसा वा थावरा वा दीघा वा महन्ता वा मज्झिमा वा रस्सका वा अणुकथूला वा दिट्ठा वा अद्दिट्ठा वा, ते अनवसेसा सब्बे सत्ता सुखितत्ता भवन्तु।

ye keci pāabhūtatthi, ye tasā vā thāvarā vā dīghā vā mahantā vā majjhimā vā rassakā vā aukathūlā vā diṭṭhā vā addiṭṭhā vā, te anavasesā sabbe sattā sukhitattā bhavantu|

Whatever kind of beings they may be – moving or still, long, large, medium, small, fine or coarse, seen or unseen – may all those beings, without exception, be happy in their hearts.

दीघा वा ये महन्ता वा मज्झिमा रस्सकाणुकथूला

दिट्ठा वा येव (ये एव​) अद्दिट्ठा ये च दूरे वसन्ति अविदूरे।

भूता वा सम्भवेसी वा सब्बे सत्ता भवन्तु सुखितत्ता॥

dīghā vā ye mahantā vā majjhimā rassakā
ukathūlā||

Verses 06:

निकुब्बेथ​।

nikubbetha|

He should insult, deceive.


निकुब्बेथ​।

na nikubbetha|

He should not insult, deceive.


परो न निकुब्बेथ​।

paro na nikubbetha|

One should not insult, deceive.


परो परं न निकुब्बेथ​।

paro para na nikubbetha|

One should not insult, deceive another.



अतिमञ्ञेथ​।

atimaññetha|

He should despise.


अतिमञ्ञेथ​।

na atimaññetha|

He should not despise.


नातिमञ्ञेथ​।

nātimaññetha|

He should not despise.


नं कञ्चि नातिमञ्ञेथ​।

na kañci nātimaññetha|

He should not despise anyone.


कत्थचि नं कञ्चि नातिमञ्ञेथ​।

katthaci na kañci nātimaññetha|

He should not despise anyone anywhere.



इच्छति।

icchati|

He wishes. (He really wants)


इच्छेय्य​।

iccheyya|

He should wish.


इच्छेय्य​।

na iccheyya|

He should not wish.


दुक्खं न इच्छेय्य​।

dukkha na iccheyya|

He should not wish suffering.


अञ्ञमञ्ञस्स दुक्खं न इच्छेय्य​।

aññamaññassa dukkha na iccheyya|

Neither should wish suffering upon the other.

(No one should wish suffering upon another, and none should desire it in return.)


ब्यारोसनाय पटिघसञ्ञाय अञ्ञमञ्ञस्स दुक्खं न इच्छेय्य​।

byārosanāya paighasaññāya aññamaññassa dukkha na iccheyya|

Neither should wish suffering upon the other because of hatred and hostility.


परो परं न निकुब्बेथ​। कत्थचि नं कञ्चि नातिमञ्ञेथ​।

ब्यारोसनाय पटिघसञ्ञाय अञ्ञमञ्ञस्स दुक्खं इच्छेय्य​।

paro para na nikubbetha| katthaci na kañci nātimaññetha|
byārosanāya paighasaññāya aññamaññassa dukkha na iccheyya|


न परो परं निकुब्बेथ नातिमञ्ञेथ कत्थचि नं कञ्चि।

ब्यारोसना पटिघसञ्ञा नाञ्ञमञ्ञस्स दुक्खमिच्छेय्य​॥

na paro para nikubbetha nātimaññetha katthaci na kañci|
byārosanā paighasaññā nāññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya||

One should not bully, insult, deceive, or despise anyone anywhere.
Neither of them should wish suffering upon the other out of hatred and hostility.



Verses 07:

अनुरक्खेय्य​।

anurakkheyya|

A person should protect.


माता अनुरक्खेय्य​।

mātā anurakkheyya|

The mother should protect.


माता पुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य​।

mātā putta anurakkheyya|

The mother should protect her child.


माता नियं पुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य​।

mātā niya putta anurakkheyya|

The mother should protect her own child.


माता नियं पुत्तं एकपुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य​।

mātā niya putta ekaputta anurakkheyya|

The mother should protect her only child.


माता आयुसा नियं पुत्तं एकपुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य​।

mātā āyusā niya putta ekaputta anurakkheyya|

The mother should protect her only child with her life.



भावये।

bhāvaye|

A person should cultivate.


मानसं भावये।

mānasa bhāvaye|

A person should cultivate a mind.


अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।

aparimāa mānasa bhāvaye|

A person should cultivate an immeasurable (boundless) mind.


सब्बभूतेसु अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।

sabbabhūtesu aparimāa mānasa bhāvaye|

A person should cultivate an immeasurable mind toward all beings.


माता आयुसा नियं पुत्तं एकपुत्तं अनुरक्खेय्य​।

सब्बभूतेसु अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।

mātā āyusā niya putta ekaputta anurakkheyya|
sabbabhūtesu aparimāa mānasa bhāvaye|


यथा माता आयुसा नियं पुत्तं एकपुत्तं अनुरक्खे,

एवम्पि सब्बभूतेसु अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।

yathā mātā āyusā niya putta ekaputta anurakkhe,
evampi sabbabhūtesu aparimā
a mānasa bhāvaye|


माता यथा नियं पुत्तं आयुसा एकपुत्तमनुरक्खे

एवम्पि सब्बभूतेसु मानसं भावये अपरिमाणं॥

mātā yathā niya putta āyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe|
evampi sabbabhūtesu mānasa bhāvaye aparimāa||

Just as a mother protects her only child with her life.
So too should one cultivate the immeasurable mind toward all beings.



Verses 08:

अपरिमाणं मानसं भावये।

aparimāa mānasa bhāvaye|

One should cultivate a boundless mind.


अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं भावये।

aparimāa mānasa metta bhāvaye|

One should cultivate a boundless mind of loving kindness.


सब्बलोकस्मिं अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं भावये।

sabbalokasmi aparimāa mānasa metta bhāvaye|

One should cultivate a boundless mind of loving kindness toward the entire world.


सब्बलोकस्मिं उद्धं च अधो च तिरियं च अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं भावये।

sabbalokasmi uddha ca adho ca tiriya ca aparimāa mānasa metta bhāvaye|

One should cultivate a boundless mind of loving kindness toward the entire world, above, below and in all directions.


सब्बलोकस्मिं उद्धं च अधो च तिरियं च अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं असम्बाधं अवेरं असपत्तं भावये।

sabbalokasmiṃ uddhaṃ ca adho ca tiriyaṃ ca aparimāṇaṃ mānasaṃ mettaṃ asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattaṃ bhāvaye|

One should practice the immeasurable mind of loving kindness - unobstructed, free from resentment and hatred - toward the entire world, above, below and in all directions.



सब्बलोकस्मिं उद्धं अधो च तिरियं च अपरिमाणं मानसं मेत्तं असम्बाधं अवेरं असपत्तं भावये।

sabbalokasmi uddha ca adho ca tiriya ca aparimāa mānasa metta asambādha avera asapatta bhāvaye|


मेत्तञ्च सब्बलोकस्मिं [1] मानसं भावये अपरिमाणं।

उद्धं अधो च तिरियञ्च असम्बाधं अवेरं असपत्तं॥

mettañca sabbalokasmi mānasa bhāvaye aparimāa|

adho ca tiriyañca asambādha avera asapatta||

One should practice the immeasurable mind of loving kindness - unobstructed, free from resentment and hatred - toward the entire world, above, below and in all directions.



[1] सब्बलोकस्मिं sabbalokasmiṃ = the entire world, implies all beings in the entire world.



Verses 09:

अधिट्ठेय्य​।

adhiṭṭheyya|

He should focus (resolve).


सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य​।

sati adhiṭṭheyya|

He should focus (resolve) on a clear mind.


एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य​। 

eta sati adhiṭṭheyya| 

He should focus (resolve) on this clear mind.


तिट्ठं वा चरं वा निसिन्नो वा सयानो वा एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य​।

tiṭṭha vā cara vā nisinno vā sayāno vā eta sati adhiṭṭheyya|

Whether standing, walking, sitting, lying down, one should focus (resolve) on this clear mind.


यावता अस्स​। 

yāvatā assa

As long as he is.


यावता विगतमिद्धो अस्स​। 

yāvatā vigatamiddho assa| 

As long as he is not drowsy (sluggish, lethargic, vague).


यावता विगतमिद्धो अस्स​, तिट्ठं वा चरं वा निसिन्नो वा सयानो वा एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य​।

yāvatā vigatamiddho assa, tiṭṭha vā cara vā nisinno vā sayāno vā eta sati adhiṭṭheyya|

As long as one is not drowsy (sluggish, lethargic, vague)whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, one should focus (resolve) on this clear mind.



आहु।

āhu|

They said. (It is said)


विहारं आहु।

vihāra āhu|

They said residence.


एतं विहारं आहु।

eta vihāra āhu|

They said this residence.


एतं विहारं ब्रह्मं आहु।

eta vihāra brahma āhu|

It is said to be this peaceful / pure state (dwelling).


एतं विहारं इध ब्रह्मं आहु।

eta vihāra idha brahma āhu|

It is said to be this peaceful / pure state (dwelling) in this very life.


यावता विगतमिद्धो अस्स​, तिट्ठं वा चरं वा निसिन्नो वा सयानो वा एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य​। एतं विहारं इध ब्रह्मं आहु

yāvatā vigatamiddho assa, tiṭṭha vā cara vā nisinno vā sayāno vā eta sati adhiṭṭheyya| eta vihāra idha brahma āhu|


तिट्ठं चरं निसिन्नो वा सयानो वा यावतस्स विगतमिद्धो।

एतं सतिं अधिट्ठेय्य ब्रह्ममेतं विहारं इधमाहु

tiṭṭha cara nisinno vā sayāno vā yāvatassa vigatamiddho|
eta
sati adhiṭṭheyya brahmameta vihāra idhamāhu||

So long as one does not fall into drowsiness (sluggishness, lethargy), whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, one should firmly resolve to maintain this clear mind.
This is said to be the most excellent, peaceful state attainable in this very life.



Verses 10:

एति।

eti|

He goes to (comes to).


पुनर एति।

punara eti|

He goes again.


जातु पुनर एति।

jātu punara eti|

He surely goes again.


जातु पुनर एति।

na jātu punara eti|

He never goes again.


हि जातु पुनर एति।

na hi jātu punara eti|

Indeed, he never goes again.


न हि जातु गब्भसेय्यं पुनर एति।

na hi jātu gabbhaseyya punara eti|

Indeed, he never goes to the mother’s womb (sasāra) again.


दिट्ठिं अनुपगम्म न हि जातु गब्भसेय्यं पुनर एति।

diṭṭhi anupagamma na hi jātu gabbhaseyya punara eti|

Having not fallen into a wrong view, indeed, one does not return to the mother’s womb (saṃsāra) again.


दिट्ठिं अनुपगम्म सीलवा दस्सनेन सम्पन्नो न हि जातु गब्भसेय्यं पुनर एति।

diṭṭhi anupagamma sīlavā dassanena sampanno na hi jātu gabbhaseyya punara eti|

Having not fallen into a wrong view, possessing right understanding and reasonable conduct, indeed, one does not return to the mother’s womb (saṃsāra) again.


दिट्ठिं अनुपगम्म सीलवा दस्सनेन सम्पन्नो

कामेसु गेधं विनेय्य न हि जातु गब्भसेय्यं पुनर एति

diṭṭhi anupagamma sīlavā dassanena sampanno
kāmesu gedha
vineyya na hi jātu gabbhaseyya punara eti|

Having not fallen into a wrong view, possessing right understanding and reasonable conduct, and having eliminated the mind filled with craving and attachment towards sensory pleasures.
Indeed, one does not return to the mother’s womb (saṃsāra) again.
